GLASS STUDIO CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

In response to the growing demand for glass classes, we have moved and expanded the glass studio, providing a well-ventilated, well-lit work area.  Glass art classes provide beginning to advanced students expert instruction in a fun, creative environment.  Information regarding safety precautions, set-up of your work area, torch set-up, annealing procedure, and temperature settings is provided to new students as they are introduced to glass bead making by instructors whose passion is glass.  Experienced and advanced students will find this to be the perfect setting for improving  techniques and experimenting with new ideas while discussing challenges and exploring resolutions.

GLASS BEAD MAKING CLASSES
Explore the exciting world of bead making as you learn how glass rods are melted and shaped to form one-of-a-kind creations that can become part of your beautiful jewelry designs or incorporated into embellishments for books, bookmarks, wire-wrapped pieces, and whatever you imagine.  Through demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and brief lectures on the properties of hot glass, equipment, and techniques, you’ll quickly start creating artistic lampwork beads. Learn the finer points of making a basic bead, with puckered ends, and learn how important gravity and heat control are when making beads. Other topics will be pulling stringers and glass canes, feathering, creating various shapes, and using dots decoratively. With a focus on design elements and the development of the your technical skills, you will learn to make beautiful glass beads while gaining an appreciation for this ancient/contemporary art form.  Supply fees, tools, and equipment will be discussed at the time of registration.

FUSED GLASS JEWELRY CLASS
In this introduction to glass fusing, you will become familiar with tools and equipment and learn how to cut and prepare glass.  Frit and dichroic glass will be used, and you will learn some creative ways to complete finished pieces.  Basic design, firing, and polishing techniques will be taught.  Learn how to design and complete several small fused glass pieces for earrings, pendants, bracelets and brooches.

Lampworked Marbles I
Come join Scott Young for a fun-filled series of workshops aimed at creating marvelous marbles.  You will experience the processes involved in creating soft glass (104 COE) art glass marbles.  This course involves plenty of “practice/play” time and covers various decorative techniques such as dots, stripes, raking, ribbons, pulling stringers, and encasement.  You will learn the basic techniques involved in gathering, shaping and finishing marbles.  In addition, topics such a shop safety/setup, equipment and tools used, etc. will be covered.  Class level is beginning/intermediate, and is appropriate for those new to making marbles, or for those who have already learned the basics with Scott’s introductory workshop.  Lampworking experience is helpful but not required.   Please bring a pair of Didymium safety glasses if possible (a limited number available for use from the instructor).

Lampworked Marbles II
Fine-tune your marble-making skills as you continue instruction in this series of 4 intermediate workshops.  Variations on the skills and techniques learned in “Marbles I” will be explored as you continue creating artistic glass marbles.  Weekly demonstrations, plus lots of one-on-one time with the instructor, ensure you have the guidance you need to create your own series of marvelous marbles.  Please bring a pair of Didymium safety glasses if possible (a limited number available for use from the instructor).

INTRODUCTION TO GLASS FUSING WORKSHOP
This two-day workshop is designed to provide a new student with the basics regarding glass fusing.  Learn the properties of glass, compatibility, design concepts, slumping into molds (i.e., plates and bowls), cutting glass, using glass frits and powders.  The projects worked on will include tiles, coasters, plates, and bowls.  We will discuss the basics of firing.  If you are familiar with glass, have some experience cutting glass and using powders, and want to learn more about fusing, this workshop will get you on the right track.

FAST TRACK LAMPWORK BEAD MAKING WORKSHOP
This workshop is geared to beginning students who want a taste of the instant gratification one finds in making your own glass beads.  After discussing the properties of hot glass, equipment, safety, and various techniques, you will begin developing technical skills.  More complex designs will be demonstrated as you learn how to create increasingly complicated and wonderful beads at your own pace.  Expect to take home many finished glass beads!  For ongoing students, this workshop provides you with an opportunity to refresh and/or hone your skills in an intense yet compact timeframe.

STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP
Learn the basics of stained glass, including cutting, copper foiling, and soldering, while developing your technical skills working with glass.   Each student will complete a small panel in this workshop.  Tools will be supplied for your use during the workshop, and the supply fee, payable to the instructor, includes glass, foil and solder.
